Distinguished Scholars

My research focuses on the Economics of Technology and Technical Change. I received my Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in 1992, and was on the faculty at the Heinz School, Carnegie Mellon University, where I held the H. John Heinz Professorship till 2009. I have published three books, nearly eighty articles and book chapters and served as co-editor, Research Policy. I am currently Department Editor Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Management Science and on the editorial board of Strategic Management Journal, Industrial and Corporate Change, and Information Economics and Policy. I have also served on advisory panels to the Secretary of Commerce, the National Academy of Sciences, and The Association for Computing Machinery.

I am a Professor at the Toulouse School of Economics, besides being a Fellow of the Econometric Society and of the European Economic Association. I have done fundamental work on Planning Theory, Auctions, Incentive Theory, Organization Economics, and the Digital Economy. In 2018-2019, as a Special Adviser to the European Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, I co-authored the report “Competition Policy for the Digital Era”. I am an active participant in debates about the Regulation of Big Tech.

I hold a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. My research focuses mainly on strategy and policy questions related to digital multi-sided platforms. Sectors focused on include: payment platforms, online marketplaces, search and booking platforms, peer-to-peer lending, and ride hailing services.

I am currently Co-Editor of the International Journal of Industrial Organization, a member of the Singapore Competition Appeal Board; EMA's Licensing, Tariffs & Competition Committee; and of NUS Angel Ventures. 

Together with my co-author Andrei Hagiu, I run a series, the “PlatformChronicles” on Substack, on the ins and outs of platform businesses. 

My main research interests are in Industrial Economics, Economic Regulation, and Competition Economics. Between 2016 and 2019, I was the Chief Competition Economist of the European Commission (Directorate General for Competition). I am also Professor of Economics at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" (Italy). I hold a Magna Cum Laude degree in Engineering and a Flute Diploma from Turin, as well as a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics. I am currently the Head of the Department of Economics & Public Policy at Imperial College Business School, and the Non-Executive Director to the board of the Financial Conduct Authority, besides being Fellow of CEPR, CESifo and ENCORE. I have held several editorial positions and published numerous scholarly articles in the best peer reviewed economics journals.

I have been practicing as an Economist for over 25 years and specialize in the Economics of Competition and Regulation. I was the first Chief Economist of the Hong Kong Competition Commission, in the Chief Economist Team at the European Commission’s Competition Directorate, and the Principal Economist at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Most recently, I headed the Asia-Pacific practice, based in Hong Kong, of a large US economic consulting firm. I am listed in the Who’s Who Legal Directory as a Competition Economist. I hold a Ph.D. in Economics from Oxford University, an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, and am a qualified lawyer in the USA, UK, and Australia.

I hold a Bachelors of Arts in Economics from Jadavpur University and two Masters degrees in Economics from Delhi School of Economics and Toulouse School of Economics, France, respectively. I pursued my Ph.D. in Economics from the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi. My core interest areas are Theoretical and Applied Microeconomics and my research interests span the domain of Microeconomics, including Public Economics, Industrial Organization, Social Choice Theory and Mechanism Design.

I am Director in the Brussels office of E.CA Economics, one of the leading European competition economics consultancies, advising law firms, companies and authorities in the fields of competition policy and regulation. My focus is on the Economic Analysis of Digital Markets, Innovation, and Intellectual Property and have a deep understanding of the latest IT infrastructures and telecommunication technologies. I have provided economic analysis and given expert evidence in a number of high-profile EC antitrust investigations, such as the EC’s Pay-TV and SEP licensing practices investigations. I have extensive experience advising on complex mergers reviewed by the European Commission – among them Hitachi/ABB, IBM/Red Hat, Microsoft/LinkedIn. My academic research has also been published in reputed economic journals. I hold a Ph.D. in Economics from the European University Institute.

My research interests are in the areas of Industrial Organisation and Economics of Regulation. My research has been published in reputed national and international journals. I am currently an Associate Professor in the Economics Area at IIM, Ahmedabad. I obtained my M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the Department of Economics, Northwestern University and a MSQE from the Indian Statistical Institute Calcutta.

I am an economist with a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University and a B.A. in Economics from Presidency College, Kolkata. My research is in policy and development economics, and I have done theoretical and empirical work on both. My current focus is on laws and institutions, and I am in charge of the Ambedkar Centre for Law and Economics at IDF.

I am an empirical economist with a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of British Columbia, and hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from IIT Kanpur. My current research interests include the Economics of Education and Technology and development. At IDF, I lead the Disha project and work on startup and innovation policy in India.

I am an economist with Masters in Economics and Finance from Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and Bachelors in Technology for NITK Surathkal. My research interests include Industrial Organisation, Labour Economics and Macroeconomics. I am currently working on competition economics, data protection and education.
